The UCLA Alumni Band, its members and guests must, at all times, comply with policies and requirements of the UCLA Alumni Association and the University of California. The following Code of Conduct (Code) is intended as a guide for members to follow while participating in activities of the UCLA Alumni Band or otherwise representing the UCLA Alumni Band. Members uncertain about the interpretation or application of any requirement of the Code should seek clarification from a member of the Board of Directors of the UCLA Alumni Band. 1. Purpose. The UCLA Alumni Band’s purpose is for its members, guests and fans to have fun while performing musically. The purposes, detailed more fully in its Bylaws, are: a) To provide music and booster support to the UCLA community b) To serve as a social organization for UCLA Bands alumni family and friends c) To support, create goodwill and strive for greater recognition for the UCLA Bands and their directors d) To foster a spirit of interest and cooperation among UCLA Band alumni towards the UCLA Bands, and e) To encourage acquaintances and fellowship between Alumni Band and current UCLA Band members. 2. Professional Behavior. The UCLA Alumni Band is committed to fostering an inclusive culture which promotes equity, values diversity, and maintains an environment in which the rights and dignity of all members are respected. Members of the UCLA Alumni Band have the right to expect professional behavior from others, and have a corresponding responsibility to behave professionally towards others. Members must demonstrate active commitment to this policy by: a. Treating others with dignity and respect b. Discouraging any form of harassment by making it clear that such behavior is unacceptable c. Supporting any member who feels they have been subject to harassment, including assisting them in making a formal report, if appropriate 3. Participation. Only dues paying members are allowed to participate in the performances of the UCLA Alumni Band. Others may be allowed to participate in performances of the UCLA Alumni Band at the discretion of the Music Director. Performers must follow the directions of the Musical Director, or his/her designee. Non-member guests may attend UCLA Alumni Band events, provided those guests comply with the other requirements of this Code. UCLA Alumni Band members and guests must comply with rules and policies of the event organizers and the performance venue. 4. Appearance. In performances or otherwise representing the UCLA Alumni Band, wherever practicable, members should wear the standard attire mandated by the UCLA Board of Directors. 5. Prohibited Actions. While representing the UCLA Alumni Band, directly or indirectly including, but not limited to, social media, members must not engage in illegal, discriminatory, or otherwise unprofessional activities, or conduct themselves in a way that could be construed as such. Unacceptable conduct also includes, but is not limited to, use of controlled substances, engaging in gambling, fighting, or excessive use of alcohol. UCLA Alumni Band members must not use their membership or appointed/elected positions for private or personal gain/advantage. 6. Responsibility for Personal Property. Members acknowledge responsibility for their personal items, music instruments and cases, and any other personal property brought to a UCLA Alumni Band event; members agree to release the UCLA Alumni Band, and any venue where the UCLA Alumni Band performs, from any claim for damage or loss, including theft, or liability arising from the negligence or fault of others. The UCLA Alumni Band bears no liability for any loss or damage to members’ personal property. 7. Violations. Ethical conduct is the responsibility of every member. Anyone who observes another member disregarding the terms and/or spirit of this Code should immediately report the incident to (1) the President, (2) Chairman of the Board, (3) the Membership Chair, or (4) any officer of the Alumni Band, who is authorized to take immediate action as necessary. The member can also submit a written Incident Report to the President. The Incident Report will be investigated by a committee of three neutral UCLA Band Officers and/or Board Members who are not identified as participants and/or witnesses in the Incident Report, appointed by the President who will report its findings and recommendations to the parties involved. Any member involved in the incident has (1) the right of appeal to UCLA Board of Directors, (2) the right to attend the Board of Directors meeting where the incident is reviewed, and (3) the right to request the attendance at that meeting of a member of the UCLA Alumni Association, in an ex-officio (voting) capacity. The Board will take appropriate corrective action, as it determines in its sole direction, which may include, a private reproval, a public reproval (a report of the incident to the membership), probation, suspension, or termination of band membership. The UCLA Alumni Band Code of Conduct is to be acknowledged by each Member every year upon renewal of their annual membership.
